We welcome newcomers and visitors. Anyone new to hunting who has been Common Riding will know what sort of equestrian experience to expect. Your horse must be reasonably fit, have sound brakes, and be used to riding in a group.
We offer a range of membership options – from a one-off introductory day to full subscription, which means you can hunt as often as you like.
In 2027 we will celebrate the bi-centenary of The Duke of Buccleuch’s Hounds.

What to Wear
We have a relaxed dress code, but you will be most comfortable in ‘ratcatcher’: a tweed hacking jacket, or a waterproof in wet weather, shirt/tie or stock, fawn britches or jodhpurs and brown or black boots. Well turned-out riders and horses show respect for our hosts.
Only the huntsman, whipper-in and occasionally the masters wear red or black hunt coats, for visibility. Visitors from other packs may wear their own hunt clothes.
Who does What
The Huntsman controls the hounds, assisted by the Whipper-in. The Field-master leads the way for the mounted followers (called ‘the field’). The Masters are responsible for the conduct of the hunt and run ‘the country’, ie they liaise with landowners in the area in which we operate. The members of the hunt, ie the subscribers, elect the Committee to represent their interests and manage the finances, including raising funds, and to appoint the Masters.
